What is U.S.-China Partner School like?
What is U.S.-China Partner school/exchange program like?
-
Length: There are two options. One is a two week program and the other is a semester program. For the new partnership, we would suggest a two week program. A two week program includes a week of school experience and a one week tour.
-
Participants: There are also two options. One is students exchange with teachers as chaperone and the other is teachers exchange. For the new partnership, we would suggest both sides begin with students exchange first.
-
Mutual benefits: Both sides should offer services that are similar in effect, but not necessarily in manner. For example, if the Chinese students provide the Americans a Ping Pong match, the Americans might offer a basketball game. For whatever arrangement, there must be a sense of equality.
-
School: School is the central focus of the program. The major goal of the program is to offer participants opportunities to learn from each other and generate interest in each other’s culture. On both sides, exchange students attend school with host students every day, following the host students’ schedule. At the same time, exchange students also attend special classes designed by the host school For example, Chinese students might attend an ESL class in the American school, while American students might attend a Chinese culture workshop such as calligraphy, paper cutting and history.
-
Housing: Ideally, exchange students will stay with host families both in U.S. and China. Another option is school dormitories.
-
Tour: Exchange students with chaperones also join in a local tour. For example, American students will visit Beijing and Shanghai while Chinese students visit New York City and Washington D.C.
How to build the partnership?
1. Form a partner/exchange committee
An exchange program requires collaboration from teachers/administrator, students and parents. It’s a good idea to form an exchange committee including administrators/teachers, parents and even student leaders.
2. Finance for the program
The majority of the fund is from the participants, but at the same time, the committee can also raise necessary funds to cover some costs. In addition, schools might also have some funds reserved for global studies or international exchanges.
3. Paperwork
Administrators/teachers from both sides should sign a formal agreement after introducing each other through emails, mail or even a visit. The agreement should contain goals and concerns for both sides. After the agreement, the exchange group will need official letters of invitation from their host school and visas from embassy or consulate.
4. Promote the exchange program at school by school meetings, the school website, or posters.
Why U.S.-China Partner School?
The U.S. and China school partnership will help both sides to:
-
Improve curriculum and instruction beyond textbooks.
-
Improve language fluency: Americans are just starting to realize the benefits of mastering the Chinese language. Most American firms aiming to do business with China need fluent Chinese speakers; American universities and social service agencies are looking for Chinese speakers since the Chinese population is growing rapidly.
3. Building lasting friendships, facilitate mutual understanding:
4. Provide opportunities to travel abroad for students, faculty and even parents:
Most people know that travel can change life. But how? You broaden your perspective, and learn to live in the moment, Most importantly, you will learn to value experiences over things.
5. Enhance global mind:
The world is just a global village. Chinese language and culture are very different from the ones in America, so the U.S.-China school partnership definitely enhances a global mindset. Those who have global mindset can easily treat the world as a playground and fully enjoy the colorful life.
6. Increase career opportunities
We have seen our high school students continue through college as students of East Asian studies, fluent in Chinese, and often returning to spend one year or one semester in China. They have found jobs that involve their understanding of Chinese language and culture. We also have welcomed back our former Chinese exchange students who studied in American high schools and colleges, or work in China, still using their understanding of America.
